The 2006 $50 American Gold Buffalo coin was our nation’s first-ever 24-karat gold coin. The design is based on the beloved imagery created by James Earl Fraser that appeared on the Buffalo Nickel 1913-1938. This coin was authorized by Public Law 109-145, dated December 22, 2005. The popular image and 24-kt gold purity made an instant hit with collectors and gold buyers.

This key date, first year of issue coin was struck at the WestPoint Mint and has been certified in perfect PF70 UCAM condition by NGC, the largest coin grading service in the world. The black core United States Treasurer’s series holders, individually hand signed by Anna Escobedo Cabral provide a stunning contrast between the gleaming proof strike mirrored surfaces of this coin and the holder.

Condition

Coins are graded on the Sheldon numeric grading scale of 1 to 70. To achieve the top grade 70, a coin must have no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. This coin has a high-quality proof strike, the term proof refers to the method of manufacture and not the condition of the coin. Proofs are coins that are specially struck for collectors, Many proof coins exhibit varying degrees of Luster, mint bloom or frost, on the design elements. This is achieved when the surrounding smooth mirrored surfaces are polished on the coining die to give them a brilliant finish. As the dies are used repeatedly to strike coins, this effect can fade. NGC has examined the “Strike Elements” of this coin and awarded it an Ultra Cameo designation. This designation only applies to proof coins where the smooth surfaces, (The fields) are deeply mirrored and the devices (design elements) are heavily frosted for bold contrast on both sides of the coin.

This is a Signature Series coin, a certified coins whose labels have been hand-signed by someone with an interesting personal connection to a particular coin. Signature Series coins allow collectors to customize their sets, enhance the quality of presentation, and add a level of exclusivity and collectability. Anna Escobedo Cabral, 42nd Treasurer of the United States, has signed this coin, she worked closely with the directors of the US Mint during a dynamic time in its history when some of its most successful and innovative coins were released. Her signature also appeared on Federal Reserve Notes Series 2003A, 2004A, 2006, and 2006A.
