2009 $20 PCGS MS70 PL – Ultra High Relief – Moy & Mercanti Signatures

This magnificent $20 Double Eagle has a special high-relief finish. High-relief coins are struck multiple times under intense pressure in the coining press to create the best possible 3D appearances for the design elements. We showcase the coin in perfect MS70 condition by PCGS. The graders at PCGS have examined the “Strike Elements” of this coin and awarded it  Proof-Like (PL) designation.  This coin was struck on reduced diameter double thickness coin blanks. The date 2009 is shown in Roman Numerals MMIX.

Condition

Coins are graded on the Sheldon numeric grading scale of 1 to 70. To achieve the top grade 70, a coin must have no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. Because of the “Strike Elements” of this coin it has been certified as Proof-Like, which greatly enhances its rarity and eye appeal. When a circulation issue coin's smooth surfaces, (fields) exhibit a higher-than-normal degree of reflectivity, the coin is said to be Proof-Like because it is reminiscent of a Proof coin. This coin has been signed by Edmund C. Moy, 38th director of the U.S. Mint John Mercanti, the twelfth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint who has one hundred design credits at the United States Mint. The Moy and Mercanti signatures are among the best known and most coveted signatures on numismatic modern issue coins.
