2021 10 x 1 oz. Reverse Proof Royal Spanish Mint Iberian Lynx Gold Coin 24 karat Gold only 12,000 minted – Dannreuther Signature

The 2021 Iberian Lynx Spanish Doubloon is the first coin released in an annual new series by the Royal Mint of Spain. The coin is minted from one-ounce of pure 24-karat gold and features a design that many believe was the precursor to the ($) sign. These coins are exquisitely crafted and feature the reverse-proof treatment.  its 12,000 mintage is sure to make it a modern coin rarity. These coins are certified in flawless Reverse Proof (RP70) condition and have the First Day of Issue provenance. Each coin is individually hand-signed by John Dannreuther, the co-founder of PCGS and one of the foremost numismatic experts in the world.

New Spanish Gold Doubloon features the design that many believe was the precursor to the ($) sign.

The “Pillars of Hercules” design is one of the most recognizable in numismatics. The original motto of “NON PLUS ULTRA” (nothing further beyond) was inscribed on the pillars as a warning to those who would venture past the Straits of Gibraltar that was the inspiration for the pillars. However, once the New World was discovered, Spain adopted “PLUS ULTRA” (further beyond) as their national motto. The Spanish doubloon (2 Escudos) featured the pillars and was one of the most recognized and accepted coins in the world. Below the pillars are two globes crowned over the sea, recognizing the joining of the Old and New World hemispheres. It is not surprising that the first coins of the New World featured this design. The Mexican and other Central and South American countries used the “Pillars of Hercules” on their gold and silver coins. The 8 Reales silver coin perhaps the most recognized silver coin, accepted the world over and preferred in the Far East.

The United States based its currency on the 8 Reales, as most of us have heard the football chant of “two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar, all for…. stand up and holler.” These gold and silver coins were accepted in the United States for payment of taxes and were legal tender until 1859. Many believe the dollar sign ($) is a direct descendant of the pillar's design. The reverse side includes the head of the Iberian lynx, a wild cat species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe and listed as an endangered species.
