2021 (S) American Silver Eagle Type 2 PCGS MS70 Emergency Issue – Emily S. Damstra Signature - First T2 Emergency Coin

The American Eagle Silver Coin produced since 1986, has been updated with a refreshed obverse (heads) and a completely redesigned reverse (tails), to mark the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program. These new coins are dubbed Type 2 coins.

This coin holds the unique distinction of being the first “Emergency Issue” coin released in the Type 2 series. Coins are collected by date, condition, rarity, special features, and eye appeal. Firsts are always popular with collectors, this coin offers the special combination of being the “First Year of Issue”, “First in series” and “First Emergency Issue coin”, making it a key date. This coin is signed by Emily S. Damstra, the designer of the Type 2 Silver Eagle, her initials ESD appear on every coin!

Condition

Coins are graded on a 70-point scale with 70 being absolute perfection. This coin has been certified in perfect MS70 condition by PCGS and has been designated as an Emergency Issue coin. Silver Eagle bullion coins are normally struck at the West Point Mint, without a mintmark. Because of the coronavirus and strong demand for coins with the new Type 2 design, the U.S. Mint has temporarily opened production lines at the San Francisco Mint and will make a limited number of coins.

Emergency Production coins are shipped in U.S. Mint sealed and strapped boxes each containing 500 coins. The coins are identified on special labels as being produced at the San Francisco Mint. Only coins sent to PCGS in these original mint sealed boxes, with supporting documentation can be certified as “Emergency Issue”. Because there is no physical mintmark on bullion strike coins, PCGS put parenthesis around the (S) on the certified labels.
