2021 Silver Eagle T1 & T2 Set NGC MS70 – Last Type 1 & First T2 Coins

The year 2021 marked the most significant change to the American Silver Eagle series in thirty-five years, John Mercanti’s iconic heraldic eagle design that’s famous around the world was replaced with a stunning new eagle landing design by Emily S. Damstra.  This set features the final Type 1 coin released with the heraldic eagle design and the first Type 2 coin displaying the eagle landing design. First and lasts in any coin series are always considered to be key dates.

What’s unusual about this set of first and last coins is that both coins are dated 2021. That’s because of the global pandemic, it was never intended that two designs would be released in the same year with the same date! Both pieces are certified in flawless MS70 condition by NGC and are individually hand-signed by Edmund C. Moy 38th Director and David J. Ryder, 39th Director of the U.S. Mint. These are the two men directly responsible for there being a Type 1 and Type 2 Silver Eagle.

Mint Director’s Series Coins MDS - NGC Certified Coins Signed by Two U.S. Mint Directors.

Edmund C. Moy, the 38th Director of the U.S. Mint, and David J Ryder, 39th Director of the U.S. Mint are individually autographing labels for Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®), under an exclusive arrangement. Moy served from 2006 to 2011, and Ryder served as both 34th and 39th 1992 to 1993 and returned to the position from 2018-2021. Both men were named in Coin World’s Most Influential People (1960-2020). Moy and Ryder brought many exciting modern coins to the marketplace, greatly enhancing the tradition of U.S. coin collecting with their leadership. They are the leaders who developed the American Silver Eagle program and made them the best-selling coins in the world.
