Condition
Coins are graded on the Sheldon numeric grading scale of 1 to 70. To achieve the top grade 70, a coin must have no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. This complete four-piece proof set is certified by NGC in perfect PF70 condition and is identified as an “Advance Release”. This is the first time the Advance Release designation has appeared on Type 2 American Gold Eagle coins. Proofs are coins that are specially struck for collectors, Many proof coins exhibit varying degrees of Luster, mint bloom or frost, on the design elements. This is achieved when the surrounding smooth mirrored surfaces are polished on the coining die to give them a brilliant finish. As the dies are used repeatedly to strike coins, this effect can fade. NGC has examined the “Strike Elements” of these coins and awarded them an Ultra Cameo designation. This designation only applies to proof coins where the smooth surfaces, (The fields) are deeply mirrored and the devices (design elements) are heavily frosted for bold contrast on both sides of the coin. All four coins in this key date, first year of issue Type 2 proof set have been signed by Anna Escobedo Cabral, 42nd Treasurer of the United States, one of the best-known names in numismatics. Her signature is predominantly recognizable because it appears on Federal Reserve Notes Series 2003A, 2004A, 2006, and 2006A.
