Surprise Die Variety – Mint Error – Mule Coins Discovered in the 2021 W $10 Gold Eagle NGC MS70 Die Variety – Mint Error – Mule

The first major die variety, mint error, mule coins in the new 2021 T2 American Gold Eagle series has just been discovered. This is the first discovery of its type in more than twenty years!

Sone $10, quarter ounce gold bullion coins were mistakenly struck on unpolished proof dies that have a W for WestPoint mintmark. Major mint errors and varieties on modern U.S. coins are rare because of modern minting procedures that prevent such pieces from being released to the public. These coins also qualify as a “Mule Error Type”, a coin that is struck from coin dies not intended to be paired together. American Gold Eagle bullion coins should not bear the W mintmark positioned in the sun rays below the date 2021 on the obverse (heads) side of the coin. These coins are a major discovery. $15,193.12 including a buyers fee was paid a public auction on November 14, for a PCGS certified MS70 coin and $7,903.70 for a PCGS MS69 certified coin.
