Coins are collected by their date, mintmark, condition, rarity, special features, and provenance. The condition of a coin is measured on a 70-point basis, the higher the grade the higher the value. Records of over 100 million certified coins called a population report or census are available to the public showing how many coins have been certified in any particular date, mintmark, and condition. Collectors seek coins with low certified populations. Additional notations on a certified coin holder such as First Day of Issue or release, or a genuine hand signature by someone with an interesting personal connection to a particular coin make a coin more desirable and more valuable.
