Mardi Gras Doubloons were first created by New Orleans artist and entrepreneur H. Alvin Sharpe in 1959. They have always been produced in nonprecious metals and in 1960 were implemented in Mardi Gras festivities for the first time after the Captain of the Krewe of Rex personally financed more than 3,000 Doubloons to be made.
 
They have been used ever since, and today we even hear stories of how many individuals got their first foray into rare coins because of those Doubloons.
 
This unique 24 karat GOLD pattern Doubloon was made by H. Alvin Sharpe himself. It weighs in at more than 2.72 ounces (over $5,200 in melt value) of gold alone – not to mention its significant historical value for the city of New Orleans.
 
This is a piece you’d be more apt to see in a Museum than someone’s private collection, and perhaps some day that may be the case.
